Sports Fans: There’s a New Player in Town

Fine dining is just fine for many occasions, but for game watching or just Sunday afternoon chilling, there’s nothing like a comfortable sports bar with a requisite menu of share-able munchies, plenty of drafts, and a splash of specialty cocktails. Oh, and did I forget to mention, televisions-the bigger, the better.
If you haven’t quite found the perfect place yet, you may have missed the opening of Duffy’s Sports Grill. The South Florida chain is moving in big time with two locations currently-by The Mall at Millenia (the former Crave) and Lake Mary (Colonial Town Park)-and many more to come.
Both Duffy’s feature green interiors with walls of TVs, although Lake Mary has a slight edge with 127 to Millenia’s 109. But first thing first-food and drink. As you would expect you don’t dine at Duffy’s if you are on a strict diet, but then again that’s part of the indulgent fun of not being so good for a few hours. A sure-fire attention getter, and possibly the best hangover cure ever, is the All-American Bloody Mary ($7), made with Tito’s vodka and garnished with a bacon cheeseburger slider.
Some of the more interesting items on the starting lineup include the Ahi Tuna Mini-Tacos (three), served sesame-crusted with wasabi cream, shaved cabbage, scallions and a spicy chile garlic sauce; and the Korean Beef Tenderloin Mini Tacos, served with a cilantro-onion relish and spicy chile garlic sauce. And the Tostado Nachos are individually made – meaning each one has jack and cheddar cheese, jalapeños and meat (grilled chicken or seasoned ground beef) for a good bite each time – so no soggy or topless chips. If you want some heat, try the Firecracker Shrimp, served crisp with a spicy sauce.
Once you get into the game you can dive into heartier dishes such as the plump, juicy wings, made 10 different ways that you can get boneless or jumbo-sized. The selection of mouth-watering burgers includes The Hangover Burger with a sunny-side-up egg, pepper-crusted bacon and two slices of cheese. There are other options though, like the black bean, ahi tuna and turkey versions.
And if you must have a salad, that’s on the menu too, ranging from the Chinese Chopped to the Flat Iron Steak on Baby Arugula. Full dinners, from salmon to ribs are also available along with several pasta dishes. It’s a pretty hefty menu and to be fair, there are several items that come in at 580 calories or less.
For the final score (jumping up and down did burn some calories!) try the Crunchy Fried Cheesecake with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, Ghiradelli caramel sauce, whipped cream and a cherry. Or indulge in a specialty cocktail (Happy Hour 2-for-1 drinks are all day) like the outrageous Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan – made with Pinnacle Country Fair Cotton vodka, cranberry juice and fresh lime juice poured over cotton candy.
Whatever team you root for, Duffy’s has named you an MVP with its frequent dining rewards program. After registering, points are automatically added to your card. With just two trips (one to each location), I earned a free appetizer. My husband and grown children like Duffy’s so it is a sure bet we will be back.
